Wayne Miller, a retired ATF agent and seasoned fire investigator, has spent a lifetime unraveling the mysteries behind some of the most devastating fires in history. Over a 25-year career with the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms in Boston, Miller was at the forefront of numerous high-profile cases, from illegal firearms and bombings to arson investigations. His commitment to justice and deep expertise in fire science have left an indelible mark on the field.

A Career Marked by Tragedy and Dedication

The episode featuring Wayne is available for free on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube and most major podcast platforms.

One of the most harrowing incidents Miller investigated was the Dupont Plaza Hotel fire in Puerto Rico on New Year’s Eve, 1986. This tragic event claimed the lives of 96 to 98 people and injured 140 others. The fire was intentionally set by disgruntled employees amid a labor dispute.

Miller spent eight grueling days on the scene, meticulously piecing together how the disaster unfolded. The fire began with chafing fuel in a storage room and quickly engulfed the ballroom and casino, trapping many guests. The investigation revealed critical security lapses, including locked emergency exits, which contributed to the high death toll.

“The sheer scale of the devastation and the preventable nature of the loss of life at the Dupont Plaza Hotel were truly heartbreaking,” Miller has reflected.

Years later, Miller’s expertise was called upon for the Worcester Fire in 1999, where six firefighters lost their lives in an abandoned warehouse blaze. This tragedy highlighted the immense risks faced by first responders and reinforced Miller’s dedication to investigating fires not only to determine causes but to prevent future occurrences.

Beyond the ATF: A Lifelong Commitment to Fire Investigation

After retiring from the ATF, Miller continued his work as a criminal and certified fire investigator. Over his career, he has examined more than 2,300 fire and explosion scenes across 43 states and provided expert testimony in federal and state courts.

His commitment to sharing knowledge extends into academia and public speaking. Miller served as an Adjunct Professor and has spoken at over 80 events across the United States and Canada, educating others on the science of fire investigation and the realities behind these tragedies.
